Celebrating Rosenmontag: A Touch of Karneval in Our Classroom

At the Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus, learning German is not only about grammar and vocabulary — it is also about experiencing the culture.

This week, our classes celebrated Rosenmontag, one of the most vibrant and joyful days of the German Karneval season. Students enjoyed wearing colourful masks, sharing cheerful moments, and watching short videos that introduced them to this unique German tradition.

Rosenmontag is widely celebrated in cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Mainz, where parades, costumes, and festive events bring people together. Through this small classroom celebration, our students had the opportunity to explore German culture in an engaging and interactive way.

Why Cultural Activities Matter

At Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus, we believe that language learning becomes more meaningful when students connect with traditions, festivals, and real-life cultural experiences. Celebrating events like Rosenmontag helps students:

  • Improve cultural understanding
  • Build confidence in speaking
  • Create joyful learning memories
  • Experience Germany beyond textbooks
